music by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky
Savonlinna / Finland
Eugene Onegin is one of the most popular titles in the world’s operatic repertoire. The new version of the famous opera prepared by Musical Director and Principal Conductor Mikhail Tatarnikov and Stage Director Andriy Zholdak was premiered at the Mikhailovsky Theatre, St. Petersburg on October 26.
It is the first opera direction by Andriy Zholdak, a native of the Ukrainian city of Kiev and already familiar to Finnish audiences from his directions of Anna Karenina, The Cherry Orchard and other productions at the Turku City Theatre.
“I have set myself the task of obtaining sympathy and empathy among the audience,” says the director. “I wish to give the viewer an opportunity to follow the secret life of a human soul. There are two principal words which I use to denote the upcoming production: sensuality and beauty.
“The production was initially thought of as a very simple and clear story of human emotions, harmony, and hope for happiness; but gradually it became more complex. I believe that the opera audience is capable of feeling and understanding a lot.”
Says Mikhail Tatarnikov the Music Director and Conductor: “When I am proposed a new view on a well-known opera, my goal is to find a symbiosis between the stage director’s interpretation and the musical material. Here every nuance, every accent and intonation is important.”
“We risked giving a carte-blanche to a stage director who had never worked in musical theatre before,” adds General Director Vladimir Kekhman. “It is obvious that the whole Theatre and especially our opera company have gained valuable experience while working with a master who is free from routine and who has a great imagination and titanic inner energy.”
The costumes for Eugene Onegin are being created by the Latvian fashion design house Mareunrol’s and will bring an air of the present day to the production.
The lighting for the production will be the work of A.J. Weissbard, one of the world’s most sought-after lighting designers.
The Mikhailovsky Theatre is to visit the Savonlinna Opera Festival from July 30 to August 3, 2013.
There will be performances of Eugene Onegin at 19.00 on July 30 and August 1 & 3.
