"As co-producer and artistic director of Berliner Festspiele (Spielzeiteuropa / European Season) I would like to take the opportunity to let you know about the remarkably successfull premiere of Andrij Zholdak's production "Romeo and Juliet, a Fragment" in Berlin.

"Romeo and Juliet, a Fragment" was premiered on October 22, 2005 at Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz as a joint collaboration of Volksbühne and Berliner Festspiele, and was followed by a second performance on October 23. In both evenings the theatre had a full house and a mixed audience of younger and older theatre goers who where surprised by the energetic force of the performance, which – most of them – liked very well.

Personally, I think this work was a highly apt opening of this year's international season of European dance and theatre, which is followed by highlights in German, British and French theatre (among other works "4.48 Psychosis", by British writer Sarah Kane starring French film and theatre actress Isabelle Huppert, and "Measure for Measure", directed by Simon McBurney of London's Complicite Theatre – one of the foremost leading independent theatre companies in Great Britain). I would like to recommend this piece also to be shown in Andrij Zholdak's own country, since it speaks with sincerity and colourful humour about the fights of Love and Power, just as Shakespeare imagined it in his own time.
